Obituary

Robert W. Finnegan

February 7, 1946 – May 22, 2026

Robert William “Bob” Finnegan passed away peacefully at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy of intellectual curiosity and a lifelong appreciation for the natural world.

Born in Evanston, Illinois, Bob pursued a distinguished academic path, graduating from Loyola Academy, then earning a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the University of Notre Dame, a master's degree in Physics from Ohio University, and a master's degree in Mathematics from the University of Cincinnati.

Bob was an early pioneer in the computer technology industry, working in database management during the formative years of personal computing. His career included contributions to the development of Microsoft Access, helping shape tools that would become widely used by businesses and individuals around the world.

A lifelong member of Mensa, Bob had a passion for learning and problem-solving that extended well beyond his professional life. He was fascinated by movies and special effects, and enjoyed photography. His affection for animals was reflected in his involvement with the Squirrel Lovers Club, a pursuit that brought him much joy. An avid lover of wordplay and puzzles, Bob especially enjoyed puns, palindromes, and tavern puzzles, delighting in the challenge of unraveling clever riddles and linguistic curiosities.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Ruth Finnegan, and by his sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Charlie Jonaitis. He is survived by his nephew, David Jonaitis; his niece, Katie Lutz, her husband, and their four children.

Bob's life was marked by a love of knowledge, unique sense of humor and an enduring fascination with the world around him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Services for Bob will be on Monday, June 29th with visitation starting at 3pm with stories of remembrance at 4:30pm at Wm. H Scott Funeral Home, 1100 Greenleaf Ave., Wilmette, IL 60091.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Chicago Area Mensa Chapter.

“Live not on evil, madam, live not on evil.”

Personal Remembrances

In addition to Bob's many contributions over the decades, he bought and donated substantial AV equipment including our best projectors.

Sorry to see his passing. His passion for movies lives on within me and others.
