The Mathematics Behind TV Game Shows
Countless people dream of being asked to “Come On Down!” and/or to spin the wheel and buy a vowel. But, just because one gets picked to play on a game show doesn’t mean he or she wins that new car or all that money! As it turns out, many successful game show winners have more than luck on their side: they have math! This talk will demonstrate how mathematical knowledge can help a contestant on game shows maximize their winning potential.
Anthony DeLegge, Ph.D, is an associate professor of mathematics at Benedictine University in Lisle, IL. His research interests include modeling the spread of disease through a population along with ways to slow or stop the spread and games and probability. He is also a huge game show fan, and got to fulfill a lifelong dream by being a contestant on the game shows Wheel of Fortune and The Chase.
