Aquatic Nuisance Species: Asian Carp and their Migration to the Great Lakes
Bighead and Silver Carp are the primary Asian carp aquatic nuisance species. By outcompeting native fish, they are endangering the fishing industry. And because they are non-native species, they have few, if any, natural predators. The migration of Asian carp northward is a major risk facing the Great Lakes today. The presentation will cover: Asian carp characteristics; history of Asian carp migration; the range of options and technologies to prevent movement towards the Great Lakes; and current dispersal methods such as Electric Barriers on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.
